Profile
A belief in Architecture as an overarching discipline emboldens us to accept a wide range of design challenges including: urban planning, landscape design, interior design, graphic design, web design, and complex computer visualization projects.
Collaboration, invention, form, engagement generally describe a kind of trajectory we strive to produce afresh each time we are given the opportunity to design something.
Every design problem contains the capacity to engender discovery. That potential is what drives the work. As a way of combating predetermination we attempt to engage each project on its own terms mining it for potential partnerships, techniques, systems and modes of operation. Despite the tyrannical forces of economy and fashion we continually strive to maintain a non-specialist experimental approach.
Darin Johnstone
Architect
Darin Johnstone is a Los Angeles based architect and educator. With twenty years of experience in the field of architecture and eleven years spent educating young architects, Darin offers a unique perspective at the nexus between education and practice.
The djA practice engages Architecture as an overarching discipline accepting a wide range of design challenges including: architecture, urban planning, landscape design, interior design, furniture design, and graphic design projects. The practice is currently working on a series of research projects as well as creative offices for the US headquarters of Globe / Dwindle, an international skateboarding apparel company based in Melbourne Australia.
Darin is a Design and Visual Studies faculty member at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) where he has taught since 2002. Darin was recently appointed director of Design Immersion Days (DID), SCI-Arc's new introduction to design program for high school students.
Darin established djA (darin johnstone Architecture) in 2004. Darin is a founding member of the architectural design collaborative flux which began in 1999 and was featured in Arc Record II in January 2006.
Darin's work has been published in Architectural Record, LA Architect, Metalocus, 306090, 25 underbara hem, AD Russia and Surface magazine among others. In 2006 LA Architect featured djA as one of the "10 to watch" in Los Angeles. Darin has received various awards, including an AIA award for the installation 'drop'. Darin received his Bachelor of Architecture from California State Polytechnic University of Pomona in 1993 and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in 1995.
From 1999-2002 Darin was a design instructor in the Architecture department at California State Polytechnic University of Pomona, and from 2000-2002 served as Resident Director of the Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Research House II.
Darin obtained professional experience and technical training in the offices of Holt Hinshaw Architects in San Francisco, Geatano Pesce in NYC, and Frank O Gehry and coopHimmelb(L)au, in Los Angeles
